Why Are We Moved By Music?

Updated: Jan 27, 2021

Through Memories

Have you ever listened to a song that made you reminisce on past events of your life? It is truly amazing how a piece of music can remind us of so much. It can remind us of a deep, nostalgic, and emotional experience!

"Music creates emotions. We can feel happy or sad just by listening to the beat and tempo. This interpretive process is similar to how we can recognize other people’s feelings by their facial expressions, body language, and tone" (Hernandez, 2019).

Through Rhythmic Movement

"Rhythm can have a powerful effect on movement, because the auditory system of the human body has a rich connection to motor systems in the brain" (Heshmat, 2018). These connections prove why music makes us want to dance, and why we feel a naturally drawn to tap our feet along the music. Loud, sudden, and fast-paced sounds generate energetic vibes. On the other hand, relaxing music can reduce feelings of anxiety.

Music is Therapeutic

Music has been used to heal the physical and emotional state of the human body in the earlier days of civilization. It was used to express what is difficult to say in words. Even until now.

Current scientific research is discovering more on how music therapy helps relieve symptoms of depression and for people who live with dementia. To date, studies suggest music may relieve symptoms of depression in the short-term.

The Music and Mental Health page, shows a ton of the benefits of music therapy for people with depression and anxiety. Some of which are as follows:

  • Reduced muscle tension

  • Increased self-esteem

  • Decreased anxiety

  • Enhanced interpersonal relationships

  • Increased motivation
